Shtetl in the Sun: Andy Sweet's South Beach 1977-1980
For this exhibition, photographer Andy Sweet was able to capture and encapsulate the bygone era of the retirees who ran South Beach in the late 1970s. He brings us into their world, mind, body and soul, through his striking color photographs. South Beach in the late 1970s was truly fun in the sun for that whole generation who came down to retire and revel in everything from exercise classes on the beach, dances, no shortage of delis, parties and what we would call today, just chilling out. Shtetl in the Sun is more than a documentary exhibit, it is a tribute to those retirees who lived and played here, perfectly capturing the lively spirit and warmth that shaped the community.
