Line Point Fence: Felix Lembersky (1913-1970),

Paintings by a prominent Jewish artist with roots in Poland and Ukraine. A participant in Avant-Garde movements in Kyiv, Lembersky went on to study in Leningrad, survived the Siege, and created images of Ukraine and Russia in realist and expressionist styles. He is best known for his Babyn Yar canvases and non-figurative work that resisted Soviet mandates for propaganda art.

The exhibition spotlights Jewish heritage discovery, origins of Russia’s current war in Ukraine, art as political resistance, Holocaust, spirituality and interfaith outreach, and the Soviet Jewry struggle in tandem with the Civil Rights movement.

Accompanied by Felix Lembersky: Paintings and Drawings, a catalogue, 2009, 154 pages, full color; and Like a Drop of Ink in a Downpour, a memoir coauthored by the artist’s daughter and granddaughter about their journey to bring the paintings out of Soviet Russia (2022)
